My First Song

About a year ago I attended a National Music Conference for Christian musicians and church leaders. The Quartet was asked to sing during many of the services. During one of the teaching sessions I prayed and asked God to let me write at least one song for Him.

Well, a couple of weeks ago, He answered my prayer. Terry & I were at Pastor's Golf Retreat (Quartet singing again). On the 2nd day of the retreat I had great plans to sleep in late. Terry woke me up about 7:45 am to let me know he was leaving the bus to go play golf. I had every intention of rolling over and going back to sleep. I turned over in my bunk but instead of sleep, the words to a poem came into my head. I thought to try to ignore it but then I remembered my good friend, Dr. Nicky Chavers (http://www.theacademyofarts.org), saying that if you ever get the words to a poem coming to you, you better write it down right then. So, I rolled out of my bunk and dug around the bus to find some scraps of paper. Within about 30 minutes I had written 3 verses and a chorus of a song. So, here it is:

The cross He bore, the crown He wore.
Why did the Father allow such cruelty?
The plan He made, the price was paid.
For me, He gave His only Son.
My redemption through Him is now begun.

Chorus:
It was for me He made the sacrifice.
It was for me He paid the dearest price.
I am undone in the light of God's dear Son.
Yet I praise Him for the victory He has won.

My sin was there, placed on Him bare.
On the Dear One, who lived so perfectly.
God turned from Him, could not look on sin.
For me, He gave His only Son.
My redemption through Him is nearly done.

Chorus:
It was for me He made the sacrifice.
It was for me He paid the dearest price.
I am undone in the light of God's dear Son.
Yet I praise Him for the victory He has won.

Down in the grave, His life He gave.
Death could not hold Him, He arose triumphantly.
Alive again, victory over sin.
For me, He gave His only Son.
My redemption through Him has now been won.

Chorus:
It was for me He made the sacrifice.
It was for me He paid the dearest price.
I am undone in the light of God's dear Son.
Yet I praise Him for the victory He has won.
